Interventional Spine & Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Education & Curriculum


  • Exposure to acute, sub-acute and chronic musculoskeletal and spine pathology
  • Opportunity to learn fluoroscopically-guided spinal injections under direct attending supervision at scheduled clinics
  • Depending on the skill progress of each fellow, opportunity to do more complex procedures as appropriate:
    • Cervical, thoracic, lumbar epidural injections
    • Cervical, thoracic, lumbar selective nerve injections
    • Cervical, thoracic, lumbar facet joint injections
    • Cervical, thoracic, lumbar medial branch blocks
    • Sacroiliac joint injections
    • Intraarticular hip, knee, and shoulder injections
    • Facet procedures (including radiofrequency neurotomy)
    • Lumbar, thoracic and cervical discography and intradiscal therapeutic procedures
    • Tenotomies
    • Percutaneous Disc Decompression
    • Spinal cord stimulation
    • Botox injections
    • Vertebroplasy/Kyphoplasty
    • Arthrograms and Myelograms
    • Interpretation of MRI, CT and plain films
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound
  • Opportunity to learn ultrasound guided injections under direct attending supervision at scheduled clinics
  • Advanced electrodiagnostic skills
  • Concussion Clinic
  • Sports Team Coverage
    • Local High Schools and Colleges
    • Opportunity for an away elective
  • Opportunity for conference time (i.e. spinal procedure didactic conference such as AAPM&R, NASS, ISIS, SIS, etc.)
  • Management of general musculoskeletal/pain disorders and pain conditions.
  • Orthopaedic Urgent Care coverage

Academics and Networking

Past and current fellows are encouraged to attend our Biennial OSS Health Fellowship Updates in Spine and Musculoskeletal Care conferences. Past meetings have been in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Snowbird, Utah, and Tucson, Arizona. Our fellows become part of a family of lifetime resources and networking.


  • 5-10% of time for academics
  • Adopt and work on a significant musculoskeletal research project
  • Write a publishable chapter or article


Each fellow is expected to:

  • Organize journal clubs
  • Teach and supervise residents and medical students on rotation

Patient Care

Each fellow is required to participate in:

  • Outpatient clinics both independently and directly supervised by attending
  • Procedure clinics directly supervised by attending
  • Electrodiagnostic examinations both independently and directly supervised by an attending
  • Concussion clinics
  • Promptly return patient related phone calls and correspondence
  • Orthopaedic Urgent Care
