OSS Health Champion John

  • A runner with knee pain from a meniscus tear

  • Back to training for a marathon

1st Procedure:

  • Right Root Meniscus Repair 2/8/18

2nd Procedure:

  • Left knee Menisectomy 9/6/18

Prior to his first injury, John was very active and over the years has run a total of 50 plus marathons and 3 ultra marathons. He was also a very active basketball referee. On January 20, 2018, John went on a 10 mile run to train for an upcoming marathon and towards the end of his run he noticed that he was having pain in his right knee. Thinking that it was nothing serious, he went about his day and attended 2 funerals that afternoon. But, as the day progressed his pain increased and he could barely walk without assistance.

Being very familiar with OSS Health and their reputation, John immediately went to the urgent care facility and had an x-ray. He received a recommendation to have an MRI and followed up with Dr. Ulmer. John received the results almost immediately. Dr. Ulmer informed John had a tear in the meniscus in his right knee and that surgery was necessary. Dr. Ulmer told John that there was a 70% chance of recovery over a period of 4-6 months. John was devastated but decided to move forward with the procedure in hopes that he could soon return to his active life.

After the procedure, John’s recovery was better than what he expected with so little pain that he only needed to take pain medication one time the first day and only needed Tylenol on the days after that. John started physical therapy 10 days after surgery and after 4 months, he was back to running and being active once again.

Then during the 4th of July holiday, John felt pain in his left knee after pulling out a jet ski. He dealt with the pain thinking that he just pulled something and it would go away. However, after six weeks the pain had not subsided, so John went back to Dr. Ulmer. This time John was told that he needed a procedure to remove the damaged pieces of the meniscus in his left knee. Dr. Ulmer assured him that this is a common procedure and that the recovery process is much quicker than the recovery for his right knee.

On September 6, 2018 John went into surgery and 4 days later was riding a bike. On the 10th day, he was even able to start jogging. Then, in December, John went back to refereeing basketball games.

John is now looking forward to running a marathon in May and feels confident in his training. John describes his experience as, “ The best outcome that was the worst situation for a runner,” and described OSS Health by saying, “They run like a well oiled machine.”
