Fellowship Director

Michael B. Furman, MD, MS

Dr. Furman is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation with ACGME sub-specialization in Pain Medicine and Sports Medicine. He diagnoses and treats all neuromusculoskeletal disorders with a special interest in spine care and sports medicine. Dr. Furman utilizes the latest evidence-based techniques in fluoroscopically guided procedures, electrodiagnostics and ultrasonography in the management of spinal, musculoskeletal, and peripheral nerve disorders. Dr. Furman lectures and publishes both locally, nationally and internationally on aggressive non-operative care of spinal disorders. He is lead editor of the Atlas of Image Guided Interventional Spine Procedures. He has received numerous awards for his teaching, research and contributions to the field.

He has held leadership roles and/or served on AAPM&R and other advisory committees; on task forces and instructional courses for the Spinal Injection Society (SIS), the North American Spine Society (NASS), and the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports and Occupational Rehabilitation (PASSOR).

James J. Gilhool, DO

Dr. Gilhool is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation with ACGME sub-specialization in Pain Medicine and Sports Medicine. He diagnoses and provides non-surgical treatment for disorders of the neck and back. Dr. Gilhool received his medical degree and completed an internship at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. His residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was done at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Dr. Gilhool then completed an Interventional Spine fellowship with the Georgia Pain Associates in Atlanta, and was Clinical Instructor in Rehabilitation Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Gilhool focuses on helping people get back to doing their daily activities and improving their independence by controlling pain through exercise and injections.

Paul S. Lin, MD

Dr. Lin is board-certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation with ACGME sub-specialization in Sports Medicine. He completed his medical degree at the American University of the Carribean followed by residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at State University of New York at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. His fellowship training in Interventional Pain and Sports Medicine was done at OSS Health in York, Pennsylvania. Dr. Lin has special interest in the non-surgical care of spine, musculoskeletal ultrasound, sports medicine and diagnostic studies.

Brian Steinmetz, DO

Dr. Steinmetz is a fellowship-trained Interventional Spine and Sports medicine physiatrist specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Additionally, he is trained in the diagnosis and management of vertebral compression fractures. He performs the kyphoplasty procedure when indicated and ensures that adequate screening for underlying causes have been performed. In addition, Dr. Steinmetz is also skilled in musculoskeletal ultrasound with special interest in the diagnostic utility of the modality.

Brady Wahlberg, DO

Dr. Wahlberg is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He completed his medical degree at A.T. Still University – Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine followed by residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at University of Pittsburgh Medicine Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Wahlberg then did his fellowship training in Interventional Pain and Sports Medicine at OSS Health in York, Pennsylvania. He has special interest in interventional spine procedures, diagnostic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided injections and sports medicine.

Shannon Shultz, MD

Dr. Schultz completed an advanced care interventional spine and sports medicine fellowship program at OSS Health and will be joining the provider team in September 2019. Dr. Schultz has special interest in interventional spine procedures, spinal cord stimulation, diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injections. She also has an interest in musculoskeletal medicine, sports medicine and electrodiagnostic studies.

Fellowship training in sports medicine and pediatrics

Brian L. Bixler, MD

Dr. Bixler is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in sports medicine and pediatrics. He received his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine followed by orthopaedic residency training at Hershey Medical Center. In addition to his medical education, Dr. Bixler completed fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopaedics at the Scottish Rite Children’s Medical Center in Atlanta. Specializing in the care of the injured athlete and the pediatric patient, Dr. Bixler focuses his practice on sports medicine and pediatric orthopaedics, targeting his patient population to age 21 and younger.

Fellowship training in shoulder surgery

Brent Hines, DO

Dr. Hines is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in shoulder surgery. He received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, PA then completed his orthopaedic residency at Memorial Hospital in York, PA. Dr. Hines then completed fellowship training in shoulder surgery at Saint Francis Orthopaedic Institute in Columbus, Georgia. He has expertise in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder as well as shoulder replacements.

Fellowship training in Sports Medicine

William Ulmer Jr., DO

Dr. Ulmer is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in Sports Medicine. He received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, then completed his orthopaedic residency at Memorial Hospital, York Hospital, Sinai Hospital and John Hopkins University Hospital Department of Pediatric Orthopaedics. Dr. Ulmer then completed fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy fellowship at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia, Richmond, VA. He has expertise in sports medicine and arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle.

Sports Medicine Manager

Robert M. Burton, MHA, LAT, ATC

Bob Burton is the Sports Medicine Manager for OSS Health. He is a licensed Athletic Trainer with twenty five (25) years of experience. Bob received his undergraduate degree in Athletic Training from the University of Iowa and received his Masters’ degree in Health Care Administration from the University of Central Florida. Bob has worked for the York Revolution Atlantic League Championship Teams, the Seattle Mariners’ and the New York Mets’ professional baseball organizations. Bob has more than 20 years experience overseeing Sports Medicine programs, and as an athletic trainer, has background at the professional, Division I, national champion junior college, high school and youth stratum.
