Screening & Treatment for Bone Density

Bone health is the preventative medicine for orthopaedics. Osteoporosis and osteopenia are silent diseases that lead to easily broken bones, disability and even death. Osteoporosis is defined as low bone density or poor bone quality. 10 million American shave osteoporosis and 34 million have low bone density. More than 1 million osteoporosis related fractures occur in the US each year. National guidelines recommend all women over 65 and men over 70 to be routinely screened for bone quality. Patients with risk factors may be referred at a younger age.

Some risk factors include: smoking, low vitamin D, prior fracture, family history, diabetes and cancer. 50% of women and 20% of men over 50 will experience on osteoporosis fracture in their remaining lifetime.

There is a 2x the risk of a second fracture after a hip fracture, and spine fractures have 5x the of another fracture.
