What is a Total Knee Replacement?
Total Knee Replacement (also known as Total Knee Arthroplasty) is a procedure that removes the bone and cartilage of the knee that has been damaged due to arthritis and replaces them with metal and plastic components. These components mimic the anatomy and function of a healthy knee so that you can return to activities without the pain caused by arthritis. The procedure is one of the most well-known and most effective in orthopaedic surgery because it dramatically improves knee pain and quality of life.

How is a Total Knee Replacement Performed at OSS Health?
During the procedure:
- Incision and joint exposure. An incision is made below, around, and above the patella (knee cap). Muscles and soft tissues are retracted.
- Implant preparation. Damaged bone and cartilage are carefully removed.
- Implants. Perfectly sized implants are placed and cemented over precisely cut knee bones.
The incision is carefully closed to prevent infection and ensure proper healing. Total procedure time is usually less than 2 hours and Physical Therapy is typically started the day of surgery to expedite recovery.
MAKO Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology
When you hear “Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology”, it’s important to understand that the MAKO Robotic-Arm doesn’t actually perform the surgery. The surgery is performed by certain OSS Health Orthopedic Surgeons, who can use the MAKO System software to pre-plan your surgery. MAKO Technology was designed to help surgeons like ours provide patients with personalized surgical experiences based on their specific diagnosis and anatomy.
Our surgeons are up to date with the latest advancements in knee replacement surgery, and one of those options is the MAKO Robotic-Assisted Knee Replacement technology. Our experts can perform knee replacement surgeries using this technology at UPMC Memorial and now at the OSS Orthopaedic Hospital. Robotic assisted joint replacement surgery is completely personalized to each patient.
The process begins with a CT scan of a patients diseased knee joint, which is then used to create a 3D model of the patient’s anatomy. The Mako System uses software to provide a personalized surgical plan based on the patient’s unique anatomy determined on the 3D model. During surgery, the robotic arm is a tool the surgeon uses to make the incisions so that they can place the total knee implant in the precise location.
