Pelvic Fracture

What is a Pelvic Fracture?

The pelvis is a bony structure that connects the trunk and the legs. The pelvis helps balance and support the trunk and contains and protects the intestines, bladder, and internal organs. Pelvic Fractures are usually caused by motor vehicle accidents, high falls and weak bones due to Osteoporosis.

If you have a Pelvic Fracture the common symptoms can include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Difficulty getting up, standing or walking
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Difficulty urinating

If you are experiencing symptoms of a Pelvic Fracture, it is best to make an appointment with one of the Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeons at OSS Health as soon as possible. Delaying treatment may cause the fracture and its symptoms to become worse. At OSS Health, our Board Certified Hip Specialists have helped thousands of patients with Pelvic Fractures live active and healthy lives using the latest non-surgical and surgical procedures.

How is a Pelvic Fracture Treated at OSS Health?

Depending on the classification of the fracture, nonsurgical treatment options may be used to reduce pain and other symptoms while the Pelvic Fracture heals.

These treatments can include:

  • Rest and ice
  • Crutches, a cane, walker or wheelchair
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory and pain medications
  • Physical Therapy
  • Osteoporosis medications

Surgical Treatment for Pelvic Fractures

In other cases, your OSS Health specialist may recommend surgery to fix a Pelvic Fracture. This procedure uses a plate and screws to reduce the fracture and restore normal pelvic anatomy. The Board Certified Hip Specialists at OSS Health have performed thousands of Pelvic Open Reduction Internal Fixation Procedures and are experts in these procedures.
