What is an Elbow Fracture?
An Elbow Fracture, also known as an Olecranon Fracture, occurs on the bony point of the elbow and is often the result of a fall onto an outstretched arm or direct blow to the elbow. When the elbow is fractured, the fracture itself is classified as either non-displaced (pieces of bone are near their normal anatomic position) or displaced (pieces of the bone are not near their normal anatomic position). Fortunately, the majority of Elbow Fractures are non-displaced fractures.
If you have an elbow fracture the common symptoms can include:
- Elbow pain
- Swelling or bruising
- A bump or lump in the elbow
- Difficulty moving the elbow
The Board Certified Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Specialists at OSS Health have helped thousands of patients with Elbow Fractures return to an active and healthy lifestyle using a variety of treatment options.
How is an Elbow Fracture Treated at OSS Health?
Depending upon the location of the fracture and whether the fracture is non-displaced or displaced, the Board Certified Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Specialists at OSS Health offer several treatment options.
In many cases, the arm can be placed in a sling or cast for several weeks while the elbow bones heal and return to their correct position in the elbow.
In other cases, your OSS Health Specialist may recommend a surgical procedure. During this outpatient procedure, the fracture is reduced by returning the bones of the elbow to their correct anatomical position and small plates or screws are used to fixate the fracture so that the bones can heal.
