De Quervain’s Tendinosis
Hand & Wrist Treatments
What is De Quervain’s Tendinosis?
Within the thumb, there are two major tendons that begin in the wrist and allow for motion and flexibility in the thumb. When these tendons, or the sheaths around them, become irritated or inflamed it is known as De Quervain’s Tendinosis. This condition seems to affect women more than men and is common during pregnancy and among those with rheumatoid arthritis.
If you have De Quervain’s Tendinosis you may experience the following symptoms:
-
Pain in the thumb, wrist or forearm
-
Swelling on the thumb side of the wrist
-
A “catching” or popping sensation when moving the thumb
At OSS Health, our Board Certified Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Specialists have helped thousands of patients with De Quervain’s Tendinosis live active and healthy lives using the latest non-surgical options.
How is De Quervain’s Tendinosis Treated at OSS Health?
In most cases, De Quervain’s Tendinosis can be managed using non-surgical treatment options. At OSS Health, these options may include:
- Activity modification
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Bracing
- Corticosteroid injections
In the instances where De Quervain’s Tendinosis has not responded to conservative treatments, your OSS Health Specialist may recommend a surgical procedure to alleviate pain. The goal of this arthroscopic procedure is to open the space within the thumb where the tendons pass so irritation to the tendons can be eliminated.
