What is a Hip Fracture?
The hip is a large and strong joint located between the trunk and the legs. The hip helps balance and support the weight of the body when standing, walking, and running. Hip fractures can be caused by motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, falls, disease, and osteoporosis.
If you have a Hip Fracture, the common symptoms can include:
-
Deep thigh or groin pain
-
Difficulty getting up or standing
-
Bruising, swelling, tenderness in and around the hip area
-
Gait changes
-
A shorter leg on the side of your broken hip
If you are experiencing symptoms of a Hip Fracture, it is best to make an appointment with one of the Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeons at OSS Health as soon as possible. Delaying treatment may cause the fracture and its symptoms to become worse. At OSS Health, our Board Certified Hip Specialists have helped thousands of patients with Hip Fractures live active and healthy lives using the latest non-surgical and surgical procedures.
How is a Hip Fracture Treated at OSS Health?
Depending on the classification of the fracture, nonsurgical treatment options may be used to reduce pain and other symptoms while the hip fracture heals. These can include:
- Rest and ice
- Crutches, a cane, walker or wheelchair
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory and pain medications
- Physical Therapy
- Osteoporosis medications
In other cases, your OSS Health specialist may recommend surgery to fix the fractured hip. This procedure uses pins, screws, a plate or plastic, and metal components to reduce the fracture and restore normal hip anatomy. The Board Certified Hip Specialists at OSS Health have performed thousands of Hip Open Reduction Internal Fixation Procedures and Partial and Total Hip Replacements and are experts in these procedures.
