What is Trigger Finger Syndrome?
Trigger Finger Syndrome is a condition caused by inflammation and enlargement of the tendons that pull the fingers towards the palm of the hand. A locking, catching, or popping of the finger when trying to straighten it are key signs of Trigger Finger Syndrome. It is also common to have the finger appear in the locked or curled position throughout the day.
Although there is no known cause of Trigger Finger Syndrome, there are certain factors that put patients at an increased risk to develop the condition such as gender, repetitive use of the fingers and other medical conditions.
If you have Trigger Finger Syndrome you may experience the following symptoms:
- A lump in the palm
- A visible curl or deformity of the finger
- Tenderness in the fingers
- Catching or popping when using the fingers
- Pain in the fingers
- Swelling in the fingers
At OSS Health, our Board Certified Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Specialists have helped thousands of patients with Trigger Finger Syndrome live active and healthy lives using the latest treatment options.
How is Trigger Finger Syndrome Treated at OSS Health?
In some cases, Trigger Finger Syndrome can be managed using non-surgical treatment options.
At OSS Health, these options may include:
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Corticosteroid injections
Trigger Finger Release Surgery
In the instances where Trigger Finger Syndrome has not responded to conservative treatments, your OSS Health Specialist may recommend a surgical procedure, known as a Trigger Finger Release, to alleviate pain and restore function to the affected finger.
During a Trigger Finger Release the tunnel that the tendon passes through is widened so the tendon can move freely and the finger can return to its normal position.
